The Epistle of James chapter 3 verse 8…But the tongue no man can tame. It is an unruly evil which is full of deadly poison. With it we bless God the Father. And with it we curse men. Men who are made in the image of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessings and cursing’s. This should not be. Does a fountain from the same location put out sweet water and bitter? Can a fig tree bear olives? So then no fountain can yield salt water and fresh..
Matthew 12 beginning in verse 34…For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out good things. And an evil man out of the evil treasure brings out the same. But I say to you. That every idle word that men shall speak. They shall give an account for it in the day of judgement. For by your words you shall be justified and by your words you shall be condemned…By the way…What you just read was coming from the mouth of Jesus Christ. There are many of you who will read this blog. Who cant stand me and these things of which I am speaking. And for what reason? The reality is that all I am doing is selecting scripture and applying them to the exposition of who it is we really are in our innermost being. This is what we call preaching the word. First Corinthians chapter 1 verse 18…For the preaching of the cross to those who perish is foolishness. But to us who are saved..it is the power of God to salvation.
There are many of you also who attend church. But are selective of what it is you want to hear about God. And in fact when you want to hear it. You have become a bottle with a cork in it. Not a fountain from which all can come and drink. Near me there is an artesian well. No matter what time of day or night that you walk over to it. There is fresh, clean, refreshing water bubbling out of it. And there are tracks by it as well.So all creatures great and small can partake of this fountain of life giving water. This well has a continual source from beneath the earth. And we as Christians have a continual sorce from above the earth. We receive our life giving water from the fountain of Jesus Christ. Jesus told the Samaritan women by Jacobs well. That she would be wise to ask of him for the living water which he possessed. For in so doing she would have eternal life. God doesn’t give this living water to us so that we may hoard it. He gives us the water of life so that we may live. And that others also by our sharing what we have been given. But that requires action on our part. And you don’t want to engage in any action. Because when you share your water.. your friends will now know who gave it to you. And how grateful you are that you have been given it. And that will mean they will now know that you are a Christian. You know…one of them.It will also mean that now you will have to start controlling your tongue in the presence of those who you are aqauianted with.In other words you will now have to either embrace the fact that you are a Christian or reject it as you are currently doing.
In the book of Joshua chapter 24 chapter 15. I believe he said it best when he was addressing the sinful lifestyle of the Israelites. And he knew that it was high time to end the bickering. And draw a line in the sand once and for all. Here is what he said to them…And if it seems an evil thing for you to serve the Lord. Choose this day who it is you will serve. Whether it be the gods your fathers served on the other side of the flood..He is talking about before Noah..Or the gods of the amorites in whose land you now live. But as for me and my household. We will serve the Lord. That my friend is called a public commitment to God. An unabashedly brazen statement to all. I am a Christian and I am proud to be a Christian. And you can feel free to pray to a can of cola if you want too.You see my friend. You also must choose this day who it is that you are going to serve. And what type of water it is that you will be serving up.Will it bring life to the drinker or death?
For out of the abundance of your own heart your mouth is speaking. And quite loudly I might add…To be continued
